Crowdsourcing is very ‘in’ at the moment. Basically crowdsourcing is where groups of people get together to find a solution to a particular problem, usually on-line. Now SETI are crowdsourcing in their attempt to find ET. Basically you download some software which constantly streams the radio signals to your home computer, and hopefully you can hear something unusual which might turn out to be radio signals from ET.
Now, a few issues come to mind for me. SETI hava done this previously. Before, SETI used a downloadable screensaver which helped process their data while your computer wasn’t so busy. So, this is a tweek to a previous idea, but does anyone really know what they are listening for? I still have issues with the desire for SETI just to focus on radio signals. Terence McKenna put it more to point when he said, “To search expectantly for a radio signal from an extraterrestrial source is probably as culture bound a presumption as to search the galaxy for a good Italian restaurant.”
