FOIA

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) exists in an attempt to bring a greater transparency to Government. The Act allows members of the public to write to any Government bodies, such as the Police, NHS, or MoD and request files or ask questions. Those bodies have a set period of time to respond. These bodies can reject the request, maybe on the grounds of national security or if the cost of answering such a request exceeds £600. Confidential information such as peoples names or email addresses will be blacked out.

Where this got interesting for me was the use of the FOIA in regards to asking the MoD searching questions about the information they have on file regarding UFOs. Currently the majority of the files have been earmarked for release so the MoD will not release the files at an individuals request, they are being released the the National Archive and can be downloaded from there. But there is much more to the MoD than the reported incidents as my blog hopefully will show…
